How to Store Your X Data Archive Safely: Six Rules After the ZIP Lands

You requested your data archive to find out what you posted. What arrives is a complete historical record: every post, every direct message, and every phone number and address that your content carried along with it. Sitting in a Downloads folder, it is an unencrypted personal dossier.

One: verify it opens before you move it

The archive usually arrives as a ZIP or compressed folder, sometimes as an email attachment. Extract and open it once before doing anything else, confirming you can see the structure down to the tweets array level.

Five: watch the timestamps and metadata

People assume an archive is just a pile of post text. It also carries timestamps, device information and interaction records. Combined, those reconstruct a fairly precise life pattern, which is more sensitive than any single post.

Six: set an expiry date
